グロリア・グレアム！！

グロリア・グレアムという女優の晩年を描いた「リヴァプール、最後の恋」でグレアムの生きざまに魅了され、彼女の出演作を見直していましたが本作だけは本邦未ソフト化のまま。
その「リヴァプール、最後の恋」において彼女本人が歌うモノクロの映像が映し出されますが、その映画が本作"Naked Alibi"そのシーンが素晴らしくて本作が見たくなりました。
彼女の歌う"Ace in the Hole"(吹替らしいですが)が目的だったのですが、ドラマもグレアムの魅力があふれんばかりで素晴らしいです。
スターリング・ヘイドンもいい味をだしていますし、すぐにカッとなり暴力を振るうジーン・バリーも力演。
傑作とまではいかないでしょうがグレアムのファンなら必見。今のところグレアムの最高傑作は本作です。

This is a superior B movie with the laconic Sterling Hayden playing a cop who was fired for police brutality after trying to convict Gene Barry (Bat Masterson", "Burke's Law" and "The Name of the Game" ) as a paranoid vicious killer who has murdered several cops by shooting one and blowing up two in their car. Hayden trails him to Mexico where he meets Gloria Grahame who is Barry's girlfriend although he is already married back in the states with a child. Hayden is determined to bring Barry back to stand trial with the help of Grahame after she sees through the lies of Barry. This is the first time I have seen Barry playing a bad guy and very convincing he is. Poor Gloria Grahame who always played these kind of female characters to great affect once again gets wiped out in the end.
Bonus material includes movie trailer and audio commentary by film historian Kat Ellinger.
I don't like calling movies B pictures because they are much better than the tag suggests. It's usually a movie without a big budget and so there is no overlong padding out of the movie. There is no fat in these movies. They get from A to B in a short space of time with no let up to catch your breath. It steams along at breakneck speed with tight scripts and dialogue.
They don't make 'em like this anymore. Film noir at it's best.

Naked Alibi is a tough, thrilling film noir from Universal Intl that, while short of a classic, deserves wider recognition. The plot isn't too original, but there are some thought-provoking elements. I appreciate it better than most other reviewers certainly.

The actors' performances, though, carry the movie. The laconic yet menacing Sterling Hayden-sure in his convictions, the gorgeous bad girl with a tender side Gloria Grahamme, and the deceptive villain Gene Barry are all delights to watch. Hayden and Grahamme are well-known for these types of roles, but this is a change-of-pace for the usually upright Barry.(Thunder Road).

For other noir fans, check out Hayden in Asphalt Jungle, one of Noir's best and Grahamme in Human Desire, The Big Heat, and especially In A Lonely Place. Noir's sexiest vixen can actually act too. Let me also add that I consider Hayden's role a precursor to John Wayne in The Searchers and even Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry.

The print is excellent as is Kat Elinger's audio commentary.

Your first impression of each of the main characters is ambiguous. None of them turn out to be what they seem at first. Even the lone survivor remains morally dubious. That’s moire!

Graham is one of favorites from that era. A “tough babe” in the parlance of the genre but ambiguous. Hayden’s role is ambiguous. So is every character and the story as whole. But that’s the point of the thing. The viewer can join the party. If you are looking for angels, look elsewhere - but not in the mirror!

Sterling Hayden, Gloria Grahame, Marcia Henderson and Gene Barry. This is a great cast. Better than a cast on your leg! It's clean and sounds great.. NAKED ALIBI is a great companion piece to HUMAN DESIRE. If that film EVER comes out on BLY-RAY. That film features BRODRICK CRAWFORD, GLORIA GRAHAME and GLENN CHVEY.

the three stars are for academy award winner Gloria Grahame. zero stars for the oh so bad film script or the lazy director that caused such terrible acting in all the other cast members. only a grahame fan would watch this more than once. the film stars sterling hayden. also appearing is gene barry embarrassingly overacting.
