Saw this many years ago and so many scenes stuck with me through the years. This movie has been "around the block" and beyond because it was filmed in 1950. Who would have thought that in 2019 it would still hold up as a great British thriller?
Great scenes of London and the people of 1950 London. Acting is quite timely and as an American, I loved the British setting and the unstoppable camera on a race across London to find Professor Willingdon and his bomb.
Loved the characters who were authentically British and for an American, so original and unforgettable!
While Barry Jones was terrific, I really related with Olive Sloane whose humor and humanity add so much to the movie.
The movie held my interest throughout and while I am an Anglophile, I loved the human tapestry that the movie presented.
The print is outstanding and the richness of the print added to its modernity. Don't miss this movie!

I saw this film first as a small child in Britain when it first came out, when my father used to take the whole family to the pictures once a week. It saved on babysitting and my parents trusted that I, the youngest, would fall asleep quickly on my mother's lap and not see anything scary if it was a horror film night. However, although I didn't understand the plot then, I caught the tension in the adults and my older siblings, and never forgot it. When I saw it again as an adult in Canada, I still was caught up in the suspense even though I knew how it ended. I've looked for it on DVD since then and was so pleased when I found it here! There were two or three places where the picture froze and I missed a few lines of dialogue, but it was worth it to see again the scenes between the obsessed scientist and the cheerful past-her-best chorus girl he holds hostage. A marvellous, understated, quietly intense performance by Barry Jones as the scientist, and eerie scenes of a silent central London emptied by the emergency evacuation. One of my favourite films.

Un film méconnu en France, mais très prisé dans le monde anglo-saxon, le critique Léonard Maltin lui attribuant par exemple la note maximale. Après BRIGHTON ROCK, chef d'oeuvre tiré d'un roman de Graham Greene, récemment édité en DVD par le même éditeur, et avant l'excellent THE MAGIC BOX, les frères Boulting ont réalisé ce film remarquable, basé sur un scénario de politique fiction. Ce type de sujet a connu depuis une mode certaine, mais peu de films ont égalé cet ULTIMATUM. Sur fond de risque de guerre nucléaire et de course aux armements, le film construit un habile suspense, sans véritable héros. Inspiré peut-être par le néo-réalisme italien, il nous fait découvrir le Londres de l'immédiat après-guerre, encore meurtri par les bombardements, ainsi que son peuple. Malgré le caractère dramatique du film, ce dernier est entrecoupé de scènes comiques bienvenues. Avec un livret. Uniquement en VOST français.
