Excellent film starring two of my favorite actors from the 1950's onwards.

I remember seeing The Light at the Edge of the World in the mid 1970's; the only time I can ever remember seeing it on UK TV. I've been after watching it again for years; hoping that it would be shown again. It had a big impact on me at the time. Both Yul Brynner and Kirk Douglas, classic actors from the 1950's and 60's and both of which are still amongst my favourite actors from that period were brilliant in it.
I'd already read Jules Verne's novel, and am always interested in seeing books made, into movies. Despite the movie not following the story with various changes such as the way the wrecker pirate Kongre ended up dying (in the book he committed suicide, whereas it was a fight to the death between him and Denton (in the book he's called Vasquez). Also, there was only one survivor of the wrecked ship in the book called John Davis , (in the movie he's an Italian called Montefiore) Despite the changes, the movie follows the book reasonably well. Most action films from that period always had some love interest included; so, instead of just one survivor of the ship that was forced onto the rocks by Kongre's men, we now find a beautiful woman who in reality is a maid, but lies, calling herself Arabella Ponsonby, the lady she was serving. The rest of the survivors had been murdered by the irate ship wreckers. instead of being murdered Kongre decides to keep her alive for reasons that would become evident later in the movie.
I've always considered it a superior movie from the early 1970's despite a poor box office reception.
I finally decided to buy it to add to my classic and cult movie collection. (I bought the Blu-Ray version of Zardoz, another great movie and the first and only movie I ever saw with my father a few weeks ago and on receiving this ordered the Blu-Ray version of Logan's Run). Pity this movie isn't available in Blu-Ray
Although the DVD sleeve is in Spanish the disk has the option to play in either Spanish or English and you can turn off subtitles if you wish. This was actually a positive for me as my daughter may be going to study dental surgery in Spain next year. Although the course is taught in English, I thought it would be a good way to pick up some Spanish, having the Spanish subtitles playing while the English audio (5:1) is playing.
