As you probably know if you're reading this, Louis Jouvet was one of France's most respected Classical actors. But (like Laurence Olivier) he could cast off his classical training and give exquisitely subtle realistic performances...and (in this film) we see one of his best. The film is an elegant French Noir that leaves one thoroughly satisfied and charmed.
Excellent transfer of a classic film. A must for any fan of French cinema or film noir. My one complaint is that the lyrics for the songs, and there's a lot of music in the movie, were left untranslated. Criterion is the only company that consistently provides subtitles for songs. For those who think it's unimportant, watch "Shoot the Piano Player," or "I Knew Her Well," for evidence of the importance of translated lyrics.
