Natalia opens up about her life and history, her childhood in Russia, her time with American Ballet Theatre and her journey to the Opera House. FORCE OF NATURE NATALIA (2019) is an 82. min. bio of ballerina Natalia Osipova, someone I dismissed until seeing her modern dance interpretation of Hans Christian Andersen's tale THE MOTHER, which was a dark and turbulent dance masterpiece. My favorite prima ballerinas hew to a still-waters-run-deep evocation based on bodily expression and generally impassive faces. Osipova has an expressive face, explosive energy, and a strong extremely flexible body. Knowing her only from a few classical ballets, i saw no depth to her characterizations but now will seek out more. Still waters may run deep but dancers who can dive like a bird to the lowest depths of a canyon only to rise again have their own profound stories to tell.

This doc is, as its cover states, a portrait not a biography. While it includes a few brief clips from Natalia's childhood and teens and a couple of performance excerpts, it is predominately concerned with lengthy footage of preparations and rehearsals for her 5th Royal Ballet season; these are modern ballets — "Facada," "The Mother," "Medusa," etc. A lengthy interview with Osipova is interspersed throughout and there are a few comments from dance critics, choreographers, and fellow dancers, but the talk is kept to a minimum and the film is mostly dance. Anyone interested in dance, not just Osipova fans, should find it rewarding.

This was an average account of Natalia Osipova career. The choreography for The Mother, Flutter and Medusa were insightful.

The dance critics seemed as if they were reading from a script, their words were not convincing. Well atleast they got paid for their contribution towards the filming.

I have watched YouTube clips of Natalia performing and training in the studio which have been inspiring. I have seen her perform live at ROH a few times as well.

I am fan of Natalia and I am pleased to have this dvd in my collection. The dvd does show some footage of her fabulous classical and contemporary work.

The best part of this documentary were the closing credits, what a spectacular build up to the finale on both counts 😉😜

I recommend this dvd to any Natalia fan and ballet lover. Natalia is more than a force of nature, she is light years ahead of her time.

Undoubtedly, we are going to see more extraordinary work from Natalia.

A stunning film of a beloved dancer of the present time ,who is also a great actress. Her vision of dance is open and profound---a great ballerina who feels / senses with all her being the need for modern dance as well. I love her in eveything --she brings magic to us all.
